Bookkeeping and Receipts Policy

About this document

What it’s for

A written financial procedures policy for a small business. It tells everyone who spends or handles the business’s money what evidence to keep, how to claim expenses, who approves what, and how the books are kept and checked. It reduces lost receipts, disallowed VAT claims, errors and fraud.

When to use it

  • When you set up your bookkeeping, or take on staff, a bookkeeper or a business partner
  • When you give anyone a company card or access to the bank
  • When preparing for VAT registration or Making Tax Digital
