Business Continuity Plan

About this document

What it’s for

A complete business continuity plan for a small or medium business. It identifies your critical activities and how quickly they must be restored, sets out who does what when something goes wrong, and gives step-by-step action cards for the most likely disruptions.

When to use it

  • Every business – most small firms that suffer a major incident without a plan struggle to recover
  • When insurers, lenders, customers or tenders ask for your continuity arrangements
  • Before you need it: test it at least once a year

What’s inside

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.

  1. Purpose and objectives
  2. Scope
  3. Roles and the Continuity Team
  4. Business impact analysis
  5. Invoking the plan
  6. Incident response stages
  7. Communications
  8. Resources and recovery arrangements
  9. Training, testing and review

Also included

How to complete it

  • Start with the business impact analysis in section 4 – it drives everything else
  • Fill in the team, contact lists and key supplier details in the appendices
  • Delete scenarios that do not apply and add any specific to you
  • Store copies off-site and in the cloud, and give the team printed action cards

Key points to check

  • Check your insurance covers business interruption for a realistic period
  • Make sure backups are tested by actually restoring data
