Business Continuity Plan for Start-ups

About this document

What it’s for

A proportionate business continuity plan for a new or small business. It helps you identify what you cannot do without, what could stop you trading, and what you will do in the first hour, day and week of an incident – from a laptop theft or cyber attack to illness, flood or a key supplier failing.

When to use it

  • When you start trading, and whenever you add staff, premises, key suppliers or systems
  • When a lender, insurer or large customer asks how you manage risk
  • After any incident or near miss, to learn from it

What’s inside

How to complete it

  • Fill in the one-page plan first (Part 1) – it is the page to print and keep at home and on your phone
  • Score your main risks in Part 2 and decide actions
  • Work through the preparation checklists in Part 3
  • Test the plan with a 30-minute "what if" exercise each year (Part 6)
