Client Risk Assessment Form (AML)

About this document

What it’s for

A form for assessing and recording the money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing risk presented by an individual client or engagement. It turns your firm-wide risk assessment into a consistent client-level rating, records why that rating was given, and sets the level of due diligence, the approval needed and when the client must be reviewed again.

When to use it

  • Before accepting any new client or new service for an existing client
  • At each periodic review (yearly for high-risk clients) and on any trigger event
  • When bringing inherited or acquired clients up to standard

What’s inside

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.

  • Part 1 – Client details
  • Part 2 – Services and expected activity
  • Part 3 – Risk questions
  • A. Client risk
  • B. Service risk
  • C. Geographic risk
  • D. Delivery channel risk
  • E. Transaction and payment risk
  • Part 4 – Automatic high-risk triggers
  • Lower risk factors (for simplified due diligence only)
  • Part 5 – Score and risk rating
  • Part 6 – Due diligence measures to be applied
  • Part 7 – Decision and approval
  • Part 8 – Review history
  • Declaration

How to complete it

  • Complete Parts 1 and 2, then answer every question in Part 3 – “not known” counts as yes until resolved
  • Check the automatic high-risk triggers in Part 4 first: any tick makes the client high risk
  • Total the scores, apply the bands in Part 5 and record any override with reasons
  • Obtain the approvals in Part 7 and diary the review date

Key points to check

  • Record identity and verification details on the separate Anti-Money Laundering Client Identification Checklist – this form records the risk decision
  • Align the scores and bands with your own firm-wide risk assessment
