Domestic Customer Cancellation Notice and Early-Start Consent

About this document

What it’s for

When you agree a job with a householder in their home, or at a distance by phone, email or online, the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 give them 14 days to cancel. This pack gives you a pre-contract information checklist, a plain-English cancellation notice, the model cancellation form, an early-start request and acknowledgement, and a cancellation record.

When to use it

  • Every time a domestic customer agrees a job in their home or away from your business premises
  • Every time a domestic customer agrees a job by phone, email, text or online
  • When the customer wants you to start within the 14-day cancellation period

What’s inside

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.

  • Part 1 – Pre-contract information checklist (for your use)
  • Your right to cancel
  • What happens if you cancel
  • Your other rights
  • Part 3 – Cancellation form
  • Alternative – early-start request by email
  • Part 5 – Cancellation record (for your use)

How to complete it

  • Give the customer the cancellation notice and form before they are bound by the contract
  • If they want work to start early, get Part 4 signed (or confirmed by email) before you start
  • Keep copies of everything with the job file
  • If they cancel, complete Part 5 and refund within 14 days

Key points to check

  • Failing to give cancellation information on an off-premises contract is a criminal offence and extends the cancellation period by up to 12 months
  • Without a valid early-start request, a customer who cancels may owe you nothing for work already done
