Family Business Succession Plan

About this document

What it’s for

A structured plan for passing a family business to the next generation or to new owners. It records the family’s aims, how decisions will be made, how successors will be chosen and developed, how ownership might move across and the inheritance tax and capital gains tax points to take advice on, with an action timeline.

When to use it

  • Ideally five to ten years before the current owner wants to step back
  • When the next generation joins the business, or after a death or illness in the family
  • Before making gifts of shares or changing wills, so tax planning fits the plan

How to complete it

  • Work through sections 1–4 as a family, with all shareholders involved
  • Complete the successor development plan (section 5) with each candidate
  • Use sections 7 and 8 to brief your accountant and solicitor
  • Agree the timeline (section 10) and review the plan every year

Key points to check

  • IHT business and agricultural property relief changed on 6 April 2026
  • Gifts of shares are disposals for capital gains tax – holdover relief may be available
  • Wills, lasting powers of attorney and the shareholders’ agreement must match the plan
