Investment Policy

About this document

What it’s for

A written investment policy for a charity that holds cash deposits or investments. It follows the Trustee Act 2000 duties and the Charity Commission’s guidance “Investing charity money: a guide for trustees” (CC14), including the guidance on responsible investment that followed the 2022 Butler-Sloss court decision.

When to use it

  • When the charity holds money it does not need to spend in the short term
  • Before appointing an investment manager – a written policy statement is a legal requirement if you delegate
  • To document how the charity manages cash across bank accounts

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.
