Marketing Policy and Brand Guidelines

About this document

What it’s for

A combined policy and brand guide. Part 1 sets the rules everyone must follow when producing marketing – the legal standards, how claims are checked and who signs content off. Part 2 is a fill-in brand guide covering your logo, colours, fonts, imagery and tone of voice, so everything you publish looks and sounds like the same business.

When to use it

  • When more than one person, or an agency or freelancer, produces your marketing
  • When launching or refreshing your brand
  • To show you take advertising and consumer law seriously if a complaint is made

How to complete it

  • Fill in names, roles and the sign-off levels in the approval table
  • Complete the brand guide in Part 2 with your actual colours, fonts and logo files
  • Delete sector rules that do not apply to you and add any that do
  • Brief staff and agencies, and keep signed approval forms

Key points to check

  • Since 6 April 2025 the Competition and Markets Authority can fine businesses directly for unfair commercial practices
  • Check the current CAP Code and any sector rules (for example financial promotions or less healthy food advertising)
