Mobile App Privacy Policy

About this document

What it’s for

Apps collect data from users and from the device itself – identifiers, location, contacts, photos, usage and crash data – often through third-party tools built into the app. UK GDPR requires a clear privacy notice, and Apple’s App Store and Google Play require a privacy policy link and accurate data disclosures. This template is written specifically for apps and comes with a checklist to make sure the policy matches what the app really does.

When to use it

  • Before publishing an app on the App Store or Google Play
  • When adding new features, permissions or third-party SDKs
  • Alongside the Mobile App Terms of Use in this range

What’s inside

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.

  • Part 1 – Privacy policy: who we are, information collected, device permissions, purposes and lawful bases, third-party SDKs, sharing, international transfers, retention, children, your rights, security
  • Part 2 – Developer checklist (data mapping, consent, app store requirements, governance)

How to complete it

  • Use the checklist in Part 2 to list exactly what data the app and its SDKs collect
  • Complete Part 1, deleting sections that do not apply
  • Link to it from the app store listing and inside the app, and keep it in step with your store privacy labels

Key points to check

  • Storing or accessing information on a user’s device (for example for analytics or advertising) needs consent unless an exemption applies
  • If children are likely to use the app, the ICO Children’s Code applies

Our templates are professionally structured starting points for UK businesses, not legal advice. For anything complex, unusual or high-value, have your final version checked by a solicitor.
