Online Reviews and Consumer Endorsements Policy

About this document

What it’s for

Since 6 April 2025 it has been a banned practice under consumer law to commission or publish fake reviews, to offer incentives for reviews without making this clear, or to present reviews in a misleading way – for example by hiding negative ones. Businesses that publish reviews must take reasonable and proportionate steps to prevent and remove fake or misleading reviews. This policy sets out how your business will do that and how staff must behave.

When to use it

  • If you ask customers for reviews, display reviews on your website, or respond to reviews on Google, Trustpilot, Amazon or social media
  • If you use influencers, testimonials or incentives to encourage reviews
  • When training staff who manage your online presence

What’s inside

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.

  • Part 1 – Policy: scope, what is never allowed, asking for reviews, incentives and influencers, moderation, responding, responsibility
  • Part 2 – Public statement on reviews (for your website)
  • Part 3 – Review moderation and reporting log
  • Part 4 – Responding to reviews: quick guide
  • Staff acknowledgement

How to complete it

  • Fill in the platforms you use and who is responsible
  • Publish the short public statement in Part 2 on your website if you host reviews
  • Train staff on Part 1 and keep the moderation log in Part 3

Key points to check

  • The Competition and Markets Authority can fine businesses up to 10% of global turnover for breaches of consumer law
  • Advertising rules (the CAP Code) also apply to testimonials and influencer content
