Accountancy practice – compliance & management

Practising Certificate, Firm Registration and Regulatory Checklist

About this document

What it’s for

A single annual checklist of the registrations, licences and disclosures a public practice needs, with ACCA-specific prompts and space for other bodies. It helps principals renew on time, keep evidence in one place and prepare for a practice monitoring visit. Use it alongside the Professional Indemnity Insurance and Regulatory Compliance Checklist.

When to use it

  • When setting up in practice, adding a principal or changing the firm’s structure
  • Each year before the practising certificate renewal and the firm’s annual return
  • Before a practice monitoring or AML monitoring visit

What’s inside

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.

  • Part 1 – Practising certificates and firm registration
  • Part 2 – Anti-money laundering
  • Part 3 – Insurance and continuity
  • Part 4 – Client money and clients
  • Part 5 – HMRC, Companies House and other registrations
  • Part 6 – Letterhead, website and email disclosures
  • Part 7 – Quality, ethics and people
  • Part 8 – Practice monitoring readiness
  • Part 9 – Renewal and deadline diary

How to complete it

  • Answer every question and record the evidence and dates
  • Check each item against your professional body’s current rulebook – rules change and conditions in [brackets] must be confirmed
  • Diary the renewal dates in Part 9

Key points to check

  • ACCA members must hold a practising certificate to carry on public practice, and firms describing themselves as “Chartered Certified Accountants” must meet ACCA’s conditions
  • Registered auditors, insolvency practitioners and firms carrying on investment business need separate authorisations
