Sale of Business Notification Letters Pack

About this document

What it’s for

Once a sale completes (or sometimes just before), customers, suppliers, staff and others need to be told what is changing and what is not – especially who to pay, who they now contract with, and who their contact is. Clear, consistent letters protect relationships, prevent payments going to the wrong place and reduce the risk of invoice fraud. This pack covers the main letters for both share sales and asset sales.

When to use it

  • Immediately after completion of a sale (unless the parties agree to announce earlier)
  • When contracts are being transferred or novated to a buyer
  • When telling staff, landlords, banks and authorities about a change of ownership

What’s inside

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.

  • Part 1A – Customers and suppliers: share sale
  • Part 1B – Customers and suppliers: asset sale
  • Part 2 – Staff announcement
  • Part 3 – Landlord, bank and authorities
  • Part 4 – Notification checklist

How to complete it

  • Choose the share sale or asset sale version of each letter
  • Agree the wording and timing with the other party before sending – most sale agreements control announcements
  • Work through the checklist in Part 4 so nobody is missed

Key points to check

  • On an asset sale, customer and supplier contracts usually need consent to transfer – use a deed of novation where needed
  • Never change bank details for payments without a verification process, and warn customers to check by phone

Our templates are professionally structured starting points for UK businesses, not legal advice. For anything complex, unusual or high-value, have your final version checked by a solicitor.
