Self Assessment Deadline and Payment on Account Reminder Letters

About this document

What it’s for

A set of four ready-to-send letters for the Self Assessment season: (1) a records and information request, (2) a final reminder when records or approval are still outstanding, (3) payment instructions for the January and July payments, and (4) advice on reducing payments on account, with an authority for you to make the claim.

When to use it

  • Letter 1 in April to June after the tax year ends; Letter 2 from early November
  • Letter 3 once the return is approved, and again before 31 July
  • Letter 4 when income has fallen, or a client asks to reduce payments

How to complete it

  • Choose the Option paragraphs that fit and delete the rest
  • Check every date and rate placeholder against gov.uk before sending

  • Keep a copy of each letter and the reply slip on the client file
