Self-Employed Therapist Agreement

About this document

What it’s for

A contract for services between a salon or clinic and a self-employed practitioner who treats the salon’s clients (and may bring their own), paid by commission or a fixed fee per treatment. It sets out the commercial terms and is drafted to reflect genuine self-employment.

When to use it

  • The salon takes the bookings and payments and pays the practitioner a share or fee
  • For beauty therapists, massage therapists, aestheticians, stylists, nail and lash technicians
  • If the practitioner pays you a fixed rent and keeps their own takings, use the Chair and Room Rental Agreement instead

How to complete it

  • Choose Option A, B or C for the fees in clause 6 and Schedule 1
  • Fill in the treatment menu and rates in Schedule 1
  • Use Schedule 2 only if you will issue self-billed invoices
  • Complete the status review in Schedule 3 before signing and each year

Key points to check

  • A contract cannot make someone self-employed – the day-to-day reality decides
  • If the practitioner works through their own limited company, read the IR35 note at clause 9
