Social Media Policy (Business Use)

About this document

What it’s for

A policy for the business’s own social media presence – the company pages and accounts, and staff who post or reply on the business’s behalf. It covers account ownership and security, content standards, approvals, dealing with comments and complaints, and a step-by-step crisis plan. Staff use of their own personal accounts is dealt with separately in your Staff Handbook.

When to use it

  • When anyone other than the owner posts on the business accounts
  • When you use an agency or freelancer to manage social media
  • Before running paid social adverts, influencer work or competitions

How to complete it

  • Set approval levels and response times that suit your team
  • Adapt the holding statements and house rules in Appendices B and C
  • Ask everyone who posts for the business to sign Appendix E

Key points to check

  • Make sure the business, not an individual, owns and controls every account
  • Paid and incentivised posts must be clearly labelled as advertising
