Website Terms of Use

About this document

What it’s for

Terms that govern how visitors may use your website. They protect your content and brand, set out what visitors must not do, explain that the information on the site is general and should not be relied on as advice, and limit your liability to visitors. They also help you meet the legal requirement to display certain information about your business online.

When to use it

  • On any business website, linked from the footer of every page
  • Alongside your privacy notice and cookie policy (both in this pack)
  • If you sell online, you also need separate terms of sale – these terms do not cover purchases
  • If visitors can post reviews, comments or other content, keep the user content sections (clauses 9 and 10)

Also included

  • Business information
  • Links and publication
  • Content and features
  • Review

How to complete it

  • Insert your business details in clause 1 – they are a legal requirement
  • Delete the account and user content clauses if your site does not have those features
  • Decide whether your site is aimed at businesses, consumers or both, and keep the right liability wording in clause 13
  • Publish the terms as a web page, with the version date, and link to them from the footer

Key points to check

  • The Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002 and company law require you to show your full business details on your site
  • If your site lets users share content with each other, the Online Safety Act 2023 may apply – check Ofcom guidance
  • You cannot exclude liability to consumers for death or injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, and other limits must be fair under the Consumer Rights Act 2015

Our templates are professionally structured starting points for UK businesses, not legal advice. For anything complex, unusual or high-value, have your final version checked by a solicitor.
