Young Worker and New or Expectant Mother Risk Assessments

About this document

What it’s for

Your general risk assessment must take account of young people and of women who are pregnant, have recently given birth or are breastfeeding. When you employ someone under 18, or an employee tells you in writing that she is pregnant, has given birth in the last six months or is breastfeeding, you must check the specific risks to that person and act on them. This document gives a structured assessment for each, with the follow-up records.

When to use it

  • Before a young person (under 18) starts work or work experience
  • As soon as an employee notifies you in writing that she is pregnant, has recently given birth or is breastfeeding
  • Again as the pregnancy progresses, on return to work, and if work changes

What’s inside

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.

  • Part A – Young worker risk assessment
  • Part B – New or expectant mother risk assessment

How to complete it

  • Use Part A for young workers and Part B for new and expectant mothers
  • Discuss the assessment with the person and record their views
  • Act on any risks: change conditions or hours, offer suitable alternative work, or as a last resort suspend on full pay (Part B)

Key points to check

  • If the young person is a child (under the minimum school leaving age) you must tell a parent the risks and controls, and check local authority byelaws and work permits
  • Treating a woman less favourably because of pregnancy is discrimination – handle the assessment supportively and confidentially
