Anti-Money Laundering Client Risk Assessment

Overview

Every practice supervised for anti-money laundering (AML) purposes must assess the risk each client poses and apply customer due diligence in proportion to that risk. Supervisors – HMRC and the professional bodies – regularly find files with no documented risk assessment, out-of-date reviews and identity gaps. This workbook turns the risk factors in the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 (MLR 2017) and the CCAB Anti-Money Laundering Guidance for the Accountancy Sector (AMLGAM) into a consistent, documented score for every client, sets the level of due diligence and the next review date, and gives the money laundering reporting officer (MLRO) one dashboard for the whole practice. Throughout this guide 'anti-money laundering' is written in full to avoid confusion with the AML Consultancy Solutions name.

Who it is for

Made for people like you

  • Example – text
  • MLROs and compliance partners – A live register of every client's risk rating, due diligence level and review date, with the gaps highlighted.
  • Client managers – A quick, consistent way to assess a new client and a printable form for the file.
  • Sole practitioners – Everything a supervisory visit asks for in one workbook: client assessments, internal reports log, training log and a practice-wide risk assessment.
  • Bookkeepers registered with HMRC – A structure that follows HMRC's guidance for accountancy service providers.

Quick start

Up and running in minutes

  1. Example – text
  1. Settings – Enter the practice name, MLRO and deputy, your supervisor and registration number, the review, screening and training intervals, and your team (with BOOM status and approval / check dates).
  2. Scoring – Look at the weights, the Medium and High thresholds, the review intervals and the answers that force a High rating. The defaults are sensible for a typical small practice – change them only if your practice-wide risk assessment says so.
  3. Risk Lists and Countries – Check the sector risks, client types and services, and make sure the country list matches the latest FATF statements.
  4. Risk Register – Add one row per client and answer every yellow column from the drop-downs. The scores, rating, due diligence level and next review date appear on the right.
  5. Assessment Form – Pick the client, print the form, tick off the due diligence measures and get it signed – by the MLRO or a partner for every High-risk client.
  6. Keep it live – Log training as it happens, record internal reports on the confidential sheet, review the Practice Risk Assessment at least yearly and check the Dashboard weekly.
