Brewery & Distillery Alcohol Duty Calculator

Overview

Since 1 August 2023 Alcohol Duty has been charged on the strength of the drink: every product pays a rate per litre of pure alcohol that depends on its category (beer, cider, sparkling cider, wine, spirits or other fermented products) and its strength band. Products under 8.5% ABV in casks, kegs or bag-in-box of 20 litres or more get draught relief, and producers of up to 4,500 hectolitres of pure alcohol a year get Small Producer Relief (SPR) – a discount that tapers as production grows and is fixed by what you made in the previous production year. This workbook does all of that for you. It holds your products and packs, logs every packaging run and every duty-paid removal, applies the right rate to each line (including the SPR rate of the year the product was made), groups the figures the way the monthly return asks for them, tracks deadlines and your duty-suspended stock, and shows the cost, duty and margin on every product.

  • Gin, rum and vodka distillers – Spirits at full rates, plus spirit-based RTD cans and draught cocktails that do qualify for SPR and draught relief.

Quick start

Up and running in minutes

  1. Example – text
  1. Settings – Enter your business name and approval reference, the report date (normally today) and the return month you want to prepare. Say whether you claim Small Producer Relief, your VAT position, your target and minimum margins and the gross profit a bar aims for.
  2. SPR – your production – Enter the pure alcohol you produced in the 2024/25 production year (1 Feb 2024 – 31 Jan 2025) from your Alcohol Production Account, and your estimate of what you still expect to make this production year. 2025/26 is totalled from the Production Log automatically.
  3. Duty Rates – Check the rate period start dates and rates. They are correct to October 2026; update the yellow cells when HMRC announces new rates (normally from 1 February).
  4. Products – List every product and pack: code, name, category, ABV, pack, container size, whether it is a dispense container, serve size, liquid cost per litre, packaging cost, trade price and shop price.
  5. Log production – Add a line to the Production Log for every packaging run with a batch number.
  6. Log removals – Add a line to the Removals Log for every product that leaves duty-paid – each invoice or delivery, plus a monthly line per product for shop and online sales – with the batch number.
  7. Record movements – Enter duty-suspended receipts and deliveries, exports, spoilt product and stock counts on Stock & Movements.
  8. Prepare the return – Pick the month on Settings, read the Monthly Return, enter any adjustments, file online by the 15th, pay by the 25th and record the dates in the return history.
