Car Finance Comparison

Overview

Car dealers and lenders sell on the monthly payment – but the cheapest monthly payment is rarely the cheapest way to run a car. This workbook puts up to five ways of getting the same car side by side: paying cash, a personal loan, hire purchase (HP), personal contract purchase (PCP) and personal contract hire (PCH, also called leasing). For each one it adds up everything you'd pay over the time you keep the car – deposits, monthly payments, final payments, fees, mileage charges, insurance, servicing, road tax and fuel – takes off what the car is worth at the end if you own it, and adds the interest your cash could have earned in savings. The result is one fair figure per option: the true total cost, per month and per mile.

Who it is for

Made for people like you

  • Example – text
  • Anyone buying or leasing a car – A clear ranking of cash, loan, HP, PCP and contract hire for the same car, mileage and term.
  • People offered a PCP at the dealer – Whether the low monthly payment is good value, your likely equity at the end, and the mileage risk.
  • People with savings who could pay cash – Whether paying cash beats finance once the lost savings interest is counted.
  • People part-way through an HP, PCP or loan – An estimate of your settlement figure, the interest you'd save and whether settling early is worthwhile.
  • WATCH OUT – This workbook gives illustrations, not financial advice. Real quotes, car values and running costs will differ. Read the agreement and the pre-contract information carefully and speak to the lender or a regulated adviser before you sign or settle.

Quick start

Up and running in minutes

  1. Example – text
  1. Get your quotes – Ask for written quotes for the same car, the same term and the same annual mileage – deposit, monthly payment, APR (or flat rate), final payment or GMFV, fees, mileage allowance and excess-mileage pence per mile.
  2. Your Car – the car – Enter the fuel type, registration date, the date you'll get it, the cash price, the list price when new and the CO2 figure.
  3. Your Car – how you'll use it – Enter how many months you'll keep it (12–60), your annual mileage, insurance, servicing and fuel cost per mile, and the rate you could earn on savings.
  4. Your Car – what it will be worth – Enter (or check) the value percentages for each year – Clear sample data empties them – or type your own end value from a trade guide.
  5. Quotes – Fill in one column per option. Leave the monthly payment blank to have it worked out from the rate, or type the quoted payment to check it. Switch off any option you're not considering.
  6. Read the Dashboard – The cheapest option overall, its true monthly cost and cost per mile, mileage warnings and the full ranking.
  7. Dig deeper – The Comparison sheet shows every figure; Settle Early helps you later if you want to pay off an agreement early.
