Company Car & EV Salary Sacrifice Calculator

Overview

Choosing how to provide a car is one of the biggest benefit decisions an employer or a company director makes – and the tax rules pull in different directions. A company car is taxed as a benefit in kind, electric cars are taxed very lightly but the rates rise every year, salary sacrifice saves tax and National Insurance but reduces pay, and a car allowance is fully taxed. This workbook puts the same car through every route, year by year for four tax years, and shows the net cost to the employee, the net cost to the employer and the combined cost after every tax, NI and tax relief.

Step 4

Who it is for

Made for people like you

  • Example – text
  • Route – What it models
  • A – Company car – The employer leases or buys the car. The employee pays income tax on the benefit in kind; the employer pays Class 1A NI, the running costs and gets tax relief (including capital allowances if bought).
  • B – EV salary sacrifice – The employee gives up gross salary and the employer provides the car. Tax and NI are saved on the salary given up; tax is added back on the car benefit. Includes the optional remuneration rules, pension effect and a minimum wage check.
  • C – Employee's own car – The employee leases or buys the car personally, gets a taxable cash allowance and is paid mileage for business journeys (with mileage allowance relief if the rate is below HMRC's).
  • D – Director of your own company – For owner-managers: should your company buy the electric car, or should you take extra dividends and buy it yourself? Compared in 'money in your pocket' terms.

Quick start

Up and running in minutes

  1. Example – text
  1. Inputs – the employee – Enter the name, salary, expected pay rise, pension details and hours. These decide the tax bands the car benefit falls into and the minimum wage check.
  2. Inputs – the car – Enter the fuel type, P11D list price, CO2 figure, electric range (plug-in hybrids), registration date and the expected business and private mileage.
  3. Inputs – each route – Enter the contract hire quote for the company car, the salary sacrifice scheme quote, the personal lease quote and any car allowance and mileage rate, plus the director details if you own the company.
  4. Read the Dashboard – The tiles and table show the four-year cost of each route for the employee, the employer and both together, and which is cheapest.
  5. Check the 'Points to watch' – Anything amber or red – such as pay falling below the minimum wage or a missing electric range – needs attention before you rely on the answer.
  6. Look at the route sheets – Each route sheet shows every step of the calculation for each tax year, with a 'How it's worked out' note on every line.
