Debt Payoff Planner

Overview

When you owe money on several cards, loans and accounts it's hard to know where to start – and paying only the minimums can keep you in debt for decades. This workbook takes every debt you have, the minimum each lender asks for and the amount you can afford each month, and works out month by month exactly how long it will take to clear them and how much interest you'll pay. It compares the two best-known methods – Avalanche (highest interest rate first) and Snowball (smallest balance first) – with your own order and with paying only the minimums, then gives you a simple payment plan to follow. It also checks whether a 0% balance transfer or a consolidation loan would actually save you money.

  • People who want a clear finish line – A debt-free date and a month-by-month list of what to pay each debt.

  • Anyone worried about their debts – Clear warnings and the details of free, confidential debt advice services.

Quick start

Up and running in minutes

  1. Example – text
  1. List your debts – On the Debts sheet enter each debt: balance, interest rate, any promotional rate and end date, and the minimum payment rule from your statement.
  2. Set your monthly amount – Enter the total you can pay towards all your debts each month. It must be at least the total of the minimum payments shown on the right.
  3. Choose a plan – Pick Avalanche, Snowball or Custom order. If you choose Custom order, number your debts 1, 2, 3… in the 'Custom order' column.
  4. Read the Dashboard and Comparison – See your debt-free date, the interest you'll pay and how the plans compare. Change the monthly amount to see the effect of paying a little more.
  5. Follow the Payment Plan – Set up payments for this month's amounts. Each month, check the Payment Plan for what to pay – when a debt is cleared its payment moves on to the next one.
  6. Check the options – Use Balance Transfer and Consolidation to see whether a 0% card or a loan would help – before you apply for anything.
  7. Update every few months – Type in new balances from your statements and the first payment month, and the plan recalculates from today.
