Foreign Exchange Exposure Tracker

Overview

If you sell or buy in euros, dollars or any other currency, every movement in the pound changes what those invoices are worth in sterling. This workbook keeps all your foreign currency invoices, expected future receipts and payments, forward contracts and currency bank accounts in one place. It works out the gains and losses you have already made when invoices were paid, the gains and losses sitting in open invoices at any revaluation date, how much of each currency you are exposed to over the next 12 months, how much of that is covered by forward contracts against your hedging policy, how actual rates compare with your budget rates, and what a 5% or 10% move in the pound would do to profit.

Who it is for

Made for people like you

  • Example – text
  • Exporters – What your overseas customers owe you is really worth in £, and how much is protected by forward contracts.
  • Importers – The £ cost of supplier invoices and orders, and the risk if the pound weakens before you pay.
  • Finance managers – Month-end revaluation of open invoices and currency bank accounts, and realised gains and losses for the accounts.
  • Owners and boards – A one-page view of currency risk, hedge cover against policy and a simple sensitivity test.

Quick start

Up and running in minutes

  1. Example – text
  1. Setup – Enter your business name, financial year, the revaluation date (usually the month end or year end) and how forward contracts should be valued. Check the ten currencies, their budget rates, interest rates and your hedging policy.
  2. Rates – Add exchange rates for each date – weekly is fine – in date order. The sample already holds two years of weekly rates.
  3. Transactions – Enter or paste every foreign currency sales and purchase invoice: type, date, customer or supplier, currency, amount, due date and, once paid, the settlement date and rate.
  4. Forecast Flows – Add the receipts and payments you expect in each currency over the next 12 months that haven't been invoiced yet.
  5. Hedging – Enter each forward contract – bank, trade date, currency, direction, amount, contract rate and maturity date.
  6. Bank Accounts – Enter each currency account's balance at the revaluation date and its £ carrying value in your books.
  7. Review – Read the Dashboard, then Exposure (hedge cover and status), Gains & Losses, Budget Variance and Sensitivity.
