Group Consolidation Workbook

Overview

When one company owns others, the group's real results are not simply the companies' accounts added together. Sales between group companies, loans between them, management charges, dividends paid up to the parent and profit on stock still sitting in another group company all have to come out, and the cost of buying a subsidiary has to be replaced by goodwill and the outside shareholders' share. This workbook does that for you. You paste in each company's trial balance, map it to one common chart of accounts, enter the ownership and acquisition details, and the workbook produces the consolidation journals, a consolidated profit and loss account and balance sheet with a column for every company, group KPIs and a dashboard – with checks that tell you when something doesn't add up.

A walk through the main sheets

The sheets you will use most, in the order you will use them – shown with the sample data every workbook comes with.

Step 1

Group Structure

Every company, ownership, acquisition details, goodwill, fair value adjustments, foreign currency rates and the NCI workings. What you do: enter each company once; update the rates every year.

Group Structure
TB Import

Step 2

TB Import

Every company's trial balance in its own currency, mapped to group codes. What you do: paste the trial balances and map each line.

Step 3

Trial Balances

Each company on the group chart in its own currency, with a balance check. What you do: nothing – just check every column balances.

Trial Balances
FX Translation

Step 4

FX Translation

The two foreign subsidiaries translated into £, with the translation reserve. What you do: nothing – rates come from Group Structure.

Who it is for

Made for people like you

  • Example – text
  • Owner-managed groups – A clear picture of how the whole group is really doing, and which companies make the money.
  • Finance managers and bookkeepers – A repeatable year-end (or quarter-end) consolidation with a full journals log and audit trail.
  • Accountants and advisers – Working papers for group accounts: goodwill, NCI, intercompany matching, unrealised profit and translation.
  • Groups near the size limits – An automatic Companies Act group size test using the limits that apply from April 2025.

Quick start

Up and running in minutes

  1. Example – text
  1. Setup – Enter the group name and the financial year start and end. Leave the intercompany tolerance at £10 unless you want to allow bigger rounding differences.
  2. Group Structure – Row P is the parent. For each subsidiary enter its name, country, currency, ownership %, average employees, acquisition (or incorporation) date, the cost of investment, its net assets at acquisition, any fair value adjustments and the goodwill life. For a foreign subsidiary, fill in a row of the Foreign Currency Rates table.
  3. Chart of Accounts – Check the group chart suits you. Add any codes you need in the blank rows – give each a statement line and, if it is an intercompany account, an intercompany type.
  4. TB Import – Paste each company's closing trial balance – entity code, its own account code and name, debit and credit – and put the group code against every line. For intercompany accounts add the other company's code in Counterparty.
  5. Check the trial balances – On Trial Balances every column must say 'Balanced'. Fix any line flagged 'Check' on TB Import.
  6. Intercompany – Look for 'Difference' in sections A–D. Enter any goods bought from another group company that are still in stock at the year end in section E.
  7. Journals – The automatic journals are already done. Add manual journals for anything else – for example to clear an intercompany difference once you know the cause.
  8. Review the results – Read the Group P&L and Group Balance Sheet, then make sure all nine consolidation checks at the foot of the balance sheet say OK. The Dashboard summarises everything.
