R&D Tax Relief Estimator

Overview

For accounting periods beginning on or after 1 April 2024, the old SME and RDEC schemes were replaced by two reliefs: the merged R&D expenditure credit scheme (a taxable credit of 20% of qualifying spend for every company) and enhanced R&D intensive support, ERIS (an extra 86% deduction and a 14.5% payable credit for loss-making SMEs that spend at least 30% of their costs on R&D). Getting a claim right means identifying the projects that really are R&D, apportioning staff time, applying the rules for contractors, agency staff and overseas work, testing intensity, working through the payment steps and meeting strict deadlines for the claim notification and additional information form. This workbook does all of that and shows which scheme gives you more.

Who it is for

Made for people like you

  • Example – text
  • Technology, engineering, life-science and software companies – A clear estimate of the claim and the cash it brings in, worked out from your own projects and payroll.
  • Finance directors and founders – Merged RDEC and ERIS side by side, the deadlines that make or break a claim and the items to tidy up first.
  • Technical leads – A project register in the format HMRC's additional information form asks for – baseline, advance, uncertainty, approach and competent professional.
  • Accountants and advisers – An audit trail from each person and invoice to the qualifying total, with every restriction shown.

Quick start

Up and running in minutes

  1. Example – text
  1. Claim Setup – Enter the company name, accounting period, the adjusted trading result before R&D relief, other profits, losses brought forward, the SME and intensity figures, PAYE and NIC, and the claim administration dates.
  2. Projects – List each project with its field, dates, status and who decided to do the R&D, and write the baseline and advance, the uncertainty, how you tackled it and the competent professional.
  3. Staff Time – Add everyone who worked on R&D: salary, employer pension and (optionally) employer NIC, and up to three project IDs with the % of their time on each.
  4. Other Costs – Log externally provided workers, subcontracted R&D, consumables, software, data & cloud and clinical trial volunteers, with the project, connected status and where the work was done.
  5. Claim Calculation – Check the qualifying expenditure, the ERIS tests, both schemes and the deadlines.
  6. Review – Work through 'Items to check before you claim' on the Dashboard, then send the claim notification (if needed) and the additional information form before the return.
