Salary vs Dividend Optimiser

Overview

If you run your own limited company, you can pay yourself in two main ways: a salary through payroll, and dividends out of the company's profit after corporation tax. Each is taxed differently. Salary costs the company employer National Insurance (NI) but saves corporation tax; dividends carry no NI but are paid from taxed profit and then taxed again personally. Getting the mix right can easily be worth several hundred to a few thousand pounds a year. This workbook runs the full company and personal tax calculation at every salary from £0 to £120,000, finds the split that leaves the most money in your pocket, and then turns that answer into a monthly payroll, quarterly dividends and a plan for the tax you'll need to set aside.

Who it is for

Made for people like you

  • Example – text
  • Owner-managed limited companies – The best salary and dividend split for the year, with the household take-home and the tax saving.
  • Husband-and-wife or two-director companies – The same answer for two directors with equal shares, including Employment Allowance.
  • Directors with other income – Rental income, pensions or a second job are built in, so the right tax bands are used.
  • Anyone planning next year – Switch between 2025/26, 2026/27 and 2027/28 rates with one drop-down.

Quick start

Up and running in minutes

  1. Example – text
  1. The company – On the Optimiser sheet, fill in the yellow cells under THE COMPANY: company name, tax year, the profit before any director pay, associated companies, other employees and how much of the profit you want to pay out.
  2. The director(s) – Under THE DIRECTOR(S), choose one or two directors, the salary you'd like to compare against, any other taxable income, employer pension contributions, Scottish taxpayer status and student loan plan.
  3. Read THE ANSWER – The four tiles show the best salary, the dividends, the household take-home and how much better off you are than with the salary you chose. The sentence underneath sums it all up.
  4. Check where the profit goes – The table and doughnut chart show how every pound of profit is split between you, corporation tax, NI, personal tax and anything kept in the company.
  5. Compare strategies – Open Strategies to see the common approaches side by side, and Computation for the detailed workings.
  6. Plan the year – Open Cash Plan for the monthly payroll figures, quarterly dividends, tax to set aside each month and the key dates.
