School & University Costs Planner

Overview

Private school fees are one of the biggest costs a family can take on – and they rise faster than prices generally, now carry VAT, and are followed by university. This planner works out what educating each of your children will cost from nursery to age 21, year by year, in the money you'll actually pay and in today's money. It then lines up how you'll pay – savings, monthly saving, income, gifts from grandparents and Junior ISAs – shows any year the money runs short, and tells you the monthly saving (or lump sum) needed today to cover everything at the return you choose. A separate sheet compares paying fees term by term with paying in advance.

Who it is for

Made for people like you

  • Example – text
  • Parents considering or already paying private school fees – Total cost per child, VAT, the most expensive years and whether your plan covers them.
  • Families mixing state and private schooling – Choose Private or State for each stage of each child – only private stages carry fees and VAT.
  • Parents planning for university – Tuition at the fee cap or via a student loan, accommodation and living costs, Maintenance Loans and Junior ISAs.
  • Grandparents helping with fees – See how regular or one-off gifts change the picture.

Quick start

Up and running in minutes

  1. Example – text
  1. Settings – Enter your family name, the first school year of the plan (normally this one) and your assumptions: return on savings, general inflation and school fee rises. Check the VAT and tuition fee cap rows.
  2. Children – For each child enter a name and date of birth, then nursery details, whether each school stage is Private or State with this year's termly fee, any discounts, university plans and Junior ISA.
  3. Extras – List the costs on top of fees – who they're for, which stage and how much a year at today's prices.
  4. Funding – Enter your education savings, what you'll save each month, what you can pay from income each year and any gifts.
  5. Read the results – The Funding sheet and Dashboard show the total cost, any shortfall and the monthly saving needed. The Projection and Child Detail sheets show every year.
  6. Termly vs Advance – If a school offers a fees-in-advance scheme, enter its terms to see whether prepaying is worth it.
