What employees really take home

A salary figure on its own says little about what actually reaches your bank account. Income tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, student loan repayments and, for parents, the High Income Child Benefit Charge all come off first – and how much depends on how your pension is paid and which tax year it is. This calculator works out an employee's take-home pay for the year, month and week, shows a typical payslip, works out the marginal rate (how much of each extra pound you keep), and shows what a pay rise is really worth. It also shows the employer's side: employer NI, employer pension and the total cost of employing someone.
