Cyber Essentials Readiness Checklist

About this document

What it’s for

A practical self-check against the current Cyber Essentials requirements, to use before you start the online assessment. It walks you through scope, the five technical control areas (firewalls, secure configuration, security update management, user access control and malware protection), backups, the inventories assessors ask about, and the director’s declaration, then records gaps and actions.

When to use it

  • Before applying for Cyber Essentials for the first time
  • Two to three months before your annual renewal, or before Cyber Essentials Plus
  • When a client, tender or insurer asks whether you meet the standard

What’s inside

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.

  • Part 1 – About Cyber Essentials and this checklist
  • Automatic-fail points under the current question set
  • How to use this checklist
  • Malware protection
  • Backups (good practice)
  • Devices
  • Cloud services
  • Networks and key software
  • Director’s confirmation of readiness (internal)
  • Related guidance and documents

How to complete it

  • Check the current requirements version and question set name first (Part 1)
  • Fill in the inventories in Part 8 – most questions depend on them
  • Mark each item Y, N or Partial and log every N or Partial in the gap log
  • Work with your IT provider; keep evidence such as screenshots

Key points to check

  • This checklist is not the official question set – always answer the live questions from your certification body
  • Answers are signed off by a director and must stay true for the whole certificate year
