Fixed-Term Contract of Employment

About this document

What it’s for

A complete contract for an employee engaged for a fixed period (for example maternity cover, a funded project or a seasonal peak), or until a specific task or event is completed. It also meets the section 1 written statement requirements.

When to use it

  • When there is a genuine, objective reason for the role to end on a date or event
  • For maternity, sickness or secondment cover, funded projects and seasonal work
  • Not for casual “as and when” work – use the Zero-Hours Agreement instead

  • Diarise a review a month before the end date to decide on renewal
  • Give the signed contract to the employee no later than their first day

Key points to check

  • Fixed-term staff must not be treated less favourably than permanent staff
