Patch and Vulnerability Management Policy

About this document

What it’s for

Most successful cyber attacks exploit known weaknesses in software that has not been updated. Cyber Essentials requires critical and high-risk security updates to be applied within 14 days and unsupported software to be removed or isolated. This policy sets out how your business keeps everything patched, and gives you an inventory, a patch log and an exceptions register to prove it.

When to use it

  • When setting up IT security or preparing for Cyber Essentials
  • Monthly, to review update status across all devices and services
  • When a serious vulnerability is announced (for example by the NCSC or a software vendor)

What’s inside

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.

  1. Scope
  2. Responsibilities
  3. Automatic updates
  4. Timescales
  5. Unsupported software and devices
  6. Vulnerability monitoring
  7. Testing and rollback

How to complete it

  • Turn on automatic updates wherever possible and record the monthly check in Schedule 2
  • Record any software you cannot update, and the risk controls, in Schedule 3

Key points to check

  • Include phones, tablets, routers, firewalls and cloud services – not just laptops
  • Software and devices no longer supported by the manufacturer must be replaced or removed from the network
