Ransomware Response Plan

About this document

What it’s for

Ransomware encrypts or steals a business’s data and demands payment. It is one of the most serious cyber threats facing UK businesses of every size. The decisions made in the first hours – what to disconnect, who to call, what to preserve – can make the difference between a few days’ disruption and losing the business. This plan gives clear steps, owners and contacts, prepared in advance.

When to use it

  • Prepare it now, before an attack, and keep a printed copy off-line
  • As soon as ransomware is suspected – for example ransom notes, files that will not open, or unusual file extensions
  • In an annual table-top exercise with key staff

What’s inside

The document is laid out in the sections below. Each one comes with a plain-English guidance note explaining what it does and what to change.

  • Part 1 – Response team and contacts
  • Part 2 – Detect and contain (first hour)
  • Part 3 – Assess (first 24 hours)
  • Part 4 – Notify
  • Part 5 – The payment decision
  • Part 6 – Recover and learn
  • Part 7 – Incident log

How to complete it

  • Fill in the response team and contacts in Part 1 and keep them up to date
  • Follow the phases in Parts 2 to 6 during an incident, recording actions in the log
  • Test the plan and your backups at least once a year

Key points to check

  • Make sure you have offline or immutable backups that ransomware cannot reach – and that you have tested restoring them
  • Check whether your cyber insurance requires you to use its incident response provider and to notify it immediately
