Training Agreement with Repayment Clause

About this document

What it’s for

An agreement between an employer and an employee for significant paid training, such as a professional qualification. The employer pays the costs and gives paid time; the employee agrees to repay a reducing share of the costs if they leave, or abandon the training, within a set period. It includes written consent to deductions and a National Minimum Wage safeguard.

When to use it

  • Before booking costly external training or a qualification
  • Not for mandatory, induction or routine training, and never for funded apprenticeship training (clause 10)

How to complete it

  • Fill in Schedule 1 with the training and the actual costs
  • Choose the repayment scale in Schedule 2 (banded or monthly)
  • Give the employee time to read it; both sign before the training is booked
  • Run the NMW check in Schedule 3 before making any deduction

Key points to check

  • Only genuine costs actually paid, reducing over time
  • Deductions need prior written agreement
  • A deduction must not take final pay below the minimum wage
